Interview: Jonathan Ulysses

This summer Space resident Jonathan Ulysses has clocked up an impressive 10 years as resident at the super club. In total, hes been playing on the island for 15 years so we decided to catch up with to find out what?s been happening on the island this year, and if those reports of Ibizas club land loosing its magic due to changes in the law have any truth in them...

So Jonathan, how?s Ibiza been for you this year?
Ibiza has been great this summer. Ive been playing at We Love and also continuing my residency at Space, plus at Salvacion, Miss Moneypennys and Kinki Malinki. Ive been doing a lot of travelling outside Ibiza with events across Europe so its been a very busy summer for me! The weather has been great on the island and the parties get better looking here every year.

This summer has marked 10 years for you as Space resident. How have you been celebrating?
By continuing to enjoy the music that I play at the club and enjoying the sprit of Ibiza by going for nice meals with friends and catching the sunsets at Cala des Moro. Space has had some great parties this year and Ive found that the best way to celebrate is to party at Space so this year its been one big party!

There have been talks this year that the island is losing its magic due to the new laws over there. What?s your take on this?
I think that the island will never lose its magic. I think that when you compare Ibiza to the other islands in the med like Majorca and Tenerife, all of them have the same licensing laws where at 6am the music stops and there are no after hours parties - not legal ones anyway! I think Ibiza has been getting away with it for some time and there had to be some kind of control with the drugs and young people wandering around like zombies at 10am frightening the local kids that live on the island. I think that in 10 years people will still come here and love it, and will forget about how it used to be saying ?remember 20 years ago the clubs here were open air?? How many people remember that even now? The magic is there - you just have to be positive to find it.

What's been the biggest change you have witnessed in your time there?
For me its the road works on the island and the building work that has taken place in the last three years across the island; the new beach-front walkway in San Antonio that now hugs the coast from the Bahia to Cala des Moro; the improvement to the size of the airport and the underground parking bays in San Antonio; the new hotels that have been popping up all over the place and how the government has really tried to improve the infrastructure on the island by trying to improve Ibiza for the people who live here all year round.

Will the island ever be the same again?
I dont think the island has changed at all; its just the perception that it has. The only thing that has really changed is our choice of where we can go in the day, which is now limited, thats all! Remember there are many beautiful things and places to go here and we must not forget that. Over the years I continually discover new things and places to go. Ibiza has always been the same; its just the people that change.

Space aside, what?s been the best party for you on the island this year?
To be honest with you I don?t really do much clubbing outside of Space! I love We Love as my best party, then Carl Cox as my second, and Mattanee and La Troya coming joint third. Outside that I would say Salvacion at El Divino; its a great night for me with all the crazy Italians looking slick but partying hard! I also like the Zoo Project in the Benimussa Hills of San Antonio, which is a wild night for the party massive.

Who have you been hanging out with? Can you dish any dirt on after party madness??
I just hang around with my fellow DJs really and sometimes that has consisted of a lot of drinking and a lot of falling over! Also hanging around villas ?til the early hours of the morning but I don?t think I?ll mention any names, but it?s been a lot of fun... whoop, whoop!!

At what age are you too old to be DJ and should you start thinking about a pipe and slippers?
I think you?re never too old to do what you love best. Most of your superstar DJs - before they were superstar DJs - probably got into it for the love of it, then started making a living out of it. I think that if youre good at what you do and there is still a demand for your sound, then go on for life! Look at Tony Blackburn; love him or hate him but you got to respect the guy for his tenacity and for being in the game for so long when at the time people didn?t even think DJing was a job!

We have had one of the wettest Augusts ever this year. Would you consider swapping Ibiza for London permanently?
I would never swap Ibiza for London. I like both places for how they enrich my life. Ibiza can be a bit boring in the winter; its very cold in January and February and its a bit like an old western with lots of tumble weeds rolling around, and then you find yourself hanging around with people that you would never usually mix with. Ryanair is doing direct flights this winter so maybe that could help the winter trade on the island in the future. In London there is so much to do in the winter that you cant really get bored. Also my family is there and I could never leave them.

Tell us about your Ulybug brand and t-shirt range...
Ive designed a number of light-weight funky t-shirts in a range of colours with a cool logo that is setting Ibiza alight. Im just concentrating on t-shirts for now but will be opening up the range to pants, flip flops, headgear, and accessories. We will be launching parties around the globe with the Ulybug tag. Your track with ?Be Free? has been heard on many an Ibizian dance floor this summer. What have you got coming up next?
Yes, Be Free is a great track that the DJs seem to like. Another project I have in the pipeline is under one of pseudonyms Ninelives; the track is called Planet Earth and will be released on Destined Records in September. Another track made by myself and Jason Herd called Panic Attack is out in September on his label, JFunk Recordings.

Where can we see you when the Ibiza season ends?
I have many booking across the globe - my dairy is popping with dates! Key parties include Kiss Da Funk in Manchester on 3rd October, Hat Clubs birthday party at Pacha London on 15th November, Mynt in Belfast on 21st November, Byblos in Glasgow on 6th December, loads of Ibiza reunions across the UK, dates for In Bed With Space in Germany, plus loads more!
