A quirky little album here from Mexican Institute of Sound, aka head of EMI Mexico, Camilo Lara. Billed as ‘Electronica meets Cha-Cha and Cumbia’, ‘Mejico Maxico’ is a pleasantly kitsch collection of beats that brought to mind a number of quite diverse influences – from crusty Big Beat to ‘Austin Powers’ bachelor-pad swing, spliffed out Dub and the kind of quirky, uplifting electronic tunes beloved of the likes of Money Mark, Mr Scruff or Thievery Corporation. Aimed more at the lounge than the dance floor, the overall feel of the album is light-hearted and summery meaning you’re likely to hear a fair few of these tracks in cafés and on summer terraces. My main criticism is that many of the pieces on this album feel more like skits or vignettes – incidental music, rather than whole tunes. But weighing in at 23 tracks there’s enough ‘meat’ in here to keep singles-hunters and DJs happy as well.
